CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS

To be able to use the title of Clinical Psychologist you need to have undergone extensive training by nationally recognised accredited organisations. This is a protected title, whereas that of psychologist is not. Clinical Psychologist will have initially completed an Undergraduate Degree in Psychology, recognised by the British Psychological Society. However, this is only the first step in working towards being professionally qualified. Further experience of working in a health or social care setting is then required to give a person the necessary experience to gain access to one of the registered national training programmes. There is fierce competition for these three-year post-doctoral training places. This training involves extensive academic study, research experience and supervised clinical practice in predominately NHS settings. Successful completion of this course equipes practitioners with the expertise required to treat mental health difficulties across the life span and work within the NHS and with other care providers in a variety of settings. Throughout their careers clinical psychologist then go on to develop specialist skills in their particular field of interest.

There is a statutory requirement for all practicing Clinical Psychologists to be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This is a regulatory body which keeps a register of health professionals who meet defined standards of training and professional skills and conduct. It exists to protect the public against the risk of poor practice.

 

Clinical Psychologists are also likely to be registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist. The BPS is the representative body for psychologists of all branches of psychology in the UK. All Chartered Psychologists have completed BPS recognised education and training of at least six years' duration. All members of the society have to adhere to a Code of Conduct and can be subject to disciplinary procedures if they fail to do so. This also includes the requirement to continue to undertake ongoing training to update knowledge and skills within their field of expertise.
